Rollins grabs third straight Gold Glove

Philadelphia Phillies shortstop Jimmy Rollins won a National League Gold Glove award for the third consecutive season after producing the best fielding percentage in Major League Baseball.

Rollins compiled a .990 fielding percentage for the Phillies, who won the National League for the second successive year but lost out to the New York Yankees in the World Series.

“I would like to thank the managers and coaches who felt I was worthy of a Gold Glove Award,” Rollins said in a statement.

“Defense is a very important part of my game and it truly is an honor to be recognized as one of the best defensive players in the league.”

Another Phillies performer, Shane Victorino, won the center field award for the second straight year.

Adrian Gonzalez of the San Diego Padres won the glove for first base, Orlando Hudson, of the L.A Dodgers claimed second base while Washington’s Ryan Zimmerman took third base.

St. Louis Cardinals had two award winners in catcher Yadier Molina and pitcher Adam Wainwright.

Dodgers outfielder Matt Kemp won his first Gold Glove for his 14 outfield assists and Houston Astros center field Michael Bourn was another first time winner.

Jeter and Teixeira win Gold Gloves

New York Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter and first baseman Mark Teixeira were among the American League players who won Gold Glove awards on Tuesday, Major League Baseball announced.

Jeter is now a four-time winner while Teixeira took the award for the third time. Both helped the Bronx Bombers win the World Series for the 27th time earlier this month.

“I’ve said it time and time again, playing championship-caliber baseball starts with pitching and defense, and I think those two components were certainly the foundation for our success in 2009,” said Jeter.

Torii Hunter, center fielder with the Los Angeles Angels and Ichiro Suzuki, Japanese right-fielder with the Seattle Mariners, both won the awards in their position for the ninth straight year.

Chicago White Sox pitcher Mark Buehrle, Tampa Bay Rays third baseman Evan Longoria and Baltimore Orioles outfielder Adam Jones all won their first Gold Glove awards.

Minnesota catcher Joe Mauer and Detroit second baseman Placido Polanco both claimed the award for the second time.

The National League awards will be announced on Wednesday.

Manny exercises 2010 option to return to Dodgers

Slugger Manny Ramirez will exercise his $20 million option to return to the Los Angeles Dodgers for the 2010 season, the team announced on their website on Friday.

Ramirez, who signed a deal last offseason that guaranteed him $25 million for 2009 and a player option for 2010, had until Tuesday to notify the club.

The 37-year-old batted .290 with 19 home runs and 63 RBIs last season but was hit with a 50-game suspension by Major League Baseball for testing positive for a banned substance.

Ramirez failed to regain top form after his return from the early season suspension.

“There was no doubt he had his struggles this past season,” Dodgers General Manager Ned Colletti told the Los Angeles Times.

“We still feel that he is a very good hitter and maybe, with a winter off and a chance to regroup, he can come back with a better frame of mind and his confidence rebuilt.”
